Finals : It’s Joel and Gina at St George’s

It’s Finals Day of the British National Championships at St George’s Hill LTC in Weybridge, with two Wild Card Challenges and two compelling finals in store.

Kennedy wins thriller to claim first title

Gina Kennedy – top seed for the third time – claimed her first British Nationals title as she overcame Sarah-Jane Perry in a repeat of their 2021 final, won by Perry.

Having edged the first two games 11-9, 11-8, Kennedy looked on the verge of victory at 8-4 in the third before Perry fought back to reduce the deficit 11-9. At 8-3 to Perry in the fourth a decider looked likely, but this time it was Gina’s turn to fight back, claiming the title with a mishit on her first match ball.

Makin turns the tables to claim second title

Wales’s Joel Makin, playing in his fifth successive Nationals final,  reversed the result of the last two finals as he overcame top seed and defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy in five games to claim his second Nationals title.

Top seed ElShorbagy started strongly, but Makin levelled in a tight second game before dominating the third. Elshorbagy fought back to force a decider but it was all Makin in the fifth.
