ElShorbagy and Kennedy headline 2024 British Nationals

England No.1s Mohamed ElShorbagy and Georgina Kennedy have been named as the top seeds for the 2024 British National Squash Championships, which will take place at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club in Weybridge from 14th to 18th August.

Two-time British National champion ElShorbagy will be looking to become the second male player in the tournament’s history to claim three back-to-back titles.

The Bristol-based former world no.1 will begin his title defence against a qualifier, before predicted matches against [5/8] seed Patrick Rooney in the quarter-finals and [3/4] seed Greg Lobban in the semi-finals. World no.17 Lobban will be attempting to become the first Scot in 20 years to lift the coveted trophy.

On the bottom half of the draw, 2021 champion Joel Makin, who has reached the final in each of the last four editions of the event, has been named as the no.2 seed.

The Welshman will open up his campaign against a qualifier before playing the winner of [5/8] seed Nick Wall and [9/12] seed Tom Walsh. From there, Makin is predicted to face [3/4] seed Marwan ElShorbagy, who will be making his Nationals debut.

In the women’s draw, world no.7 Kennedy will return in a bid to claim her maiden British National title. The London-based 27-year-old, a runner-up in 2021 and a semi-finalist last year, enjoyed a stellar season last year in which she climbed as high as no.5 in the women’s world rankings.

Kennedy, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, will play a qualifier in her first match before a potential quarter-final bout against [5/8] seed Katie Malliff and semi-final clash versus [3/4] seed Tesni Murphy.

In the bottom half of the draw, two-time champion Jasmine Hutton and three-time winner Sarah-Jane Perry are scheduled to meet in the last four.

Defending champion Hutton, who is also hoping to secure a hat-trick of titles, will face a qualifier in her opening match before a potential clash against [5/8] seed Emily Whitlock. Perry, meanwhile, is predicted to play [5/8] seed Georgia Adderley of Scotland in the last eight.

Both tournaments will feature a qualifying event, with four players from each progressing to the main draw.
