Top seed Georgina Kennedy continued her quest for a second British Nationals title after seeing off an attack-minded display from No.4 seed Torrie Malik at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club in Weybridge.
World No.8 Kennedy, champion in 2024, delivered a composed and accurate performance to advance to the final by an 12-10, 11-4, 11-2 scoreline.
The first game saw multiple swings in momentum, with errors and winners from Malik’s racket largely dictating the scoreline. After falling 9-4 down, World No.37 Malik fired in a string of powerful winners to win six straight points and sit game ball up at 10-9.
However, Kennedy showed her experience to clinch three successive points and take the first game 12-10.
Kennedy continued to play some clean, accurate squash in the second game, racing into a quick-fire 7-2 lead against an increasingly frustrated Malik. Accurate hitting down both wings from Kennedy continued to cause Malik problems, with the 29-year-old doubling her advantage by an 11-4 scoreline.
Once again, it was Kennedy who came out quickest at the start of the third game, building a healthy lead and not looking back from there. The England No.1 wrapped up the win after just 29 minutes of play.
“I’m really happy with that,” Kennedy said after the match. “Torrie brings something unique to the tour. I think we all know that she can hit winners from loose positions, but she also hits winners where she has no right to! I think that’s what makes her so hard and dangerous to play.
“I knew she was going to be a danger since all the way back in juniors. To beat her 3-0, I’m really happy with that.
“I’ve been working on a lot in the summer break and I want to get matches. I think that helps see how you fare, so it was really important for me today.”
