Hutton Battles Past Turmel To Reach Third British Nationals Final

No.2 seed Jasmine Hutton delivered a battling display to defeat No.3 seed Lucy Turmel in straight games and keep her hopes of a third British Nationals title alive.

Hutton moved through to face British No.1 Georgina Kennedy in Saturday’s title decider thanks to an 11-3, 11-9, 13-11 victory.

The World No.12 settled quickly into the semi-final contest on her home court inside St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, catching Turmel off guard with a quick-fire 11-3 first-game victory.

Turmel improved her level of accuracy at the start of the second, assuming 5-2 and 7-4 leads over her England teammate. However, buoyed on by the home support, Hutton began to narrow the scoreline, picking her punches smartly down the forehand wing, in particular.

Winning seven of the next nine points, Hutton clinched the second game from Turmel’s grasp to move two games to the good.

World No.28 Turmel once again started quickly after the game break, finding her range with some smart play into the front two corners. The Englishwoman moved the scoreline from 6-2 to 10-8, but saw two opportunities to get a game on the board come and go.

After saving two game balls, Hutton stayed composed in the pressure tie-break to clinch the third game 13-11 and advance to her third British Nationals final.

After the match, Hutton said: “I’m really happy to get through in three. Lucy has improved a lot since last season, and she put me under such pressure. Especially because I was behind in both the second and third games. I’m proud of how I battled back in those moments.

“I’m pleased to get through against a tough opponent.

“I’ve known Lucy since I was 11 years old. Even back then it was a tough match. I love her a lot, but I’m really happy to win today.”
